A few words

Meganisi is a small island, located between Lefkada and Aitoloakarnania. It took its name from the fact that it is the largest island of the Televoides islands (Mega + nisi = big island).

History

The island has been inhabited since the ancient times, when it was called Tafos (Tomb) or Tafias. During the bronze age, it was the center of the pirate people calles Televoes, from where the Televoides islands got their name. Later, the island became part of the administration of Lefkada, where it belongs until today. In 1864, it was united with Greece along with the rest of the Ionian islands. It is said that during the Greek-Italian war, due to a sea cave, Meganissi was the secret base of the submarine Papanikolis.

In the island of Meganisi you will admire beautiful natural landscapes and countless pristine beaches. Wander in the picturesque alleys of Katomerio, which is the capital of the island. The most famous attraction of the island is undoubtedly the cave of Papanikoli, with the access to it being possible only by sea, while impressive is the old chapel of Agios Georgios, which is worth a visit. In addition, on the north side of the island, the coastline forms many "fjord", where steep rocks and sandy beaches coexist harmoniously.
